Wow I really like the self-portrait. The lighting is tremendously dynamic and the direct expression is engaging. The dark background separates the face beautifully.
Nice job overall with your mom. Your camera is able to keep up with the high dynamic range of the scene as you are shooting into the light. To make them even stronger I would move in closer and use the most telephoto lens your camera has in order to keep you back just a little bit. Framing just the face down through the edge of her necklace with the top of her head almost cut off at the top of the frame provides for a really nice composition. Nice job with the lighting though.
