God is in the Detail/Up Close

  1. I appreciate how nice and close you are to your subjects and how you managed to get them pretty sharp… A difficult thing with macro shooting. One of the main rules for the class that was to turn off your flash and use natural, available light. It's in the observation of light and it's subtle expression where the medium of photography really comes alive. Appreciating the light in photography is the equivalent of appreciating tonality in music.

The best way to work with natural light is to shoot with daylight. Using artificial light is usually pretty bad. The problem with flash is that it comes directly from the axis of the lens and does not allow for a subtle appreciation of the form.
